Poloxamer 188 is a block copolymer composed of a polyoxyethylene segment and a polyoxypropylene segment, the block copolymer being terminated by two hydroxyl groups. At room temperature for white to yellowish translucent waxy solid. 18 in the 188 name of the poloxamer means that the molecular weight of the polyoxypropylene segment is about 1800, and the latter digit 8 means that the mass ratio of the polyoxyethylene segment is about 80%. The average molecular weight of the polymer was 7680-9510. Structurally, the polyoxypropylene segments in the polymer are hydrophobic, while the polyoxyethylene segments are hydrophilic, which makes the poloxamer 188 both lipophilic and hydrophilic. The poloxamer 188 is thus a non-ionic surfactant.

In particular, high-purity poloxamer 188, which are widely used in biopharmaceutical preparations, are self-assembled into micelles through poloxamer 188 in water, making them ideal drug transport carriers. For example, ornidazole injection and propofol injection utilize the emulsification of poloxamer 188 to promote the dispersion of the drug in the human body. The addition of poloxamer 188 to diazepam injection significantly reduces the precipitation of crystals after exposure of the injection to blood, which can cause thrombophlebitis. In addition, poloxamer 188 can be used as a solid dispersant and increase the dissolution rate of the drug concerned to promote the absorption of the drug, for example, for selepin, digoxin, phenylbutazon, etc. On the basis of solubilizing drugs, poloxamer 188 as a matrix can play a slow-release and prolonged effect, such as for griseofulvin latex cream, compound metronidazole suppository, indomethacin suppository and so on.
