- Product Description
- Hydroxyphenyl esters, also known as parabens, are obtained by reacting p-hydroxybenzoic acid with an alcohol. The antibacterial activity of hydroxyphenyl esters increases as the length of the alkane chain increases. Methyl ester has the lowest antibacterial activity and butyl ester is the highest. The combined use of hydroxyphenyl esters enhances antibacterial and antiseptic activity due to synergistic effects. Therefore, methyl ester, ethyl ester, propyl ester, and butyl ester are often used in combination.
Application Range- Hydroxyphenyl esters are widely used as antibacterial preservatives in cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations.
- Combination of methylparaben and hydroxypropylpropyl ester as an antibacterial preservative for various injections
Precautions- When a nonionic surfactant is present, the antibacterial activity is significantly reduced due to the action of the micelles.
- Iron ions can cause discoloration, weak bases and strong acids promote their hydrolysis
